What is Law Day?
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day as a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law. In 1961, Congress, by joint resolution, designated May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day.
How does the Bar Foundation celebrate Law Day?
Annually, the Bar Foundation and the Nebraska Supreme Court cooperate to celebrate Law Day and to encourage educational activities that help students better understand the role of courts in our democracy. The two organizations also partner with local bar associations to celebrate Law Day in communities throughout the state. Although May 1 is the official date for Law Day, celebrations may take place either before or after that date.
Law Day 2015
This year's theme is "American Ingenuity—Innovation and Imagination. (See sidebar for list of Classroom Resources for beginning Law Day discussions with students.) The Foundation's celebration will take place with the Hall/Howard County Bar Association in Grand Island on May 4. A program featuring Dr. Matt Waite, University of Nebraska Drone Journalism Lab, will discuss the benefits of the technology and the laws that are emerging to guide drone usage. Members of the Character Council from Gates Elementary School will be recognized for their civic engagement activity, and a member of the local bar association will be recognized for distinguished service.
Law Day 2014
The theme for 2014 was "American Veterans – Everyday Heroes." The celebration in North Platte honored area veterans as well as the St. Patrick's High School Student Council for its civic engagement project for the benefit of the Wounded Warriors organization. The Lincoln County Historical Museum presented the program featuring recollections of volunteers and veterans who were involved with the North Platte Canteen during World War II. The Canteen was the subject of the 2014 One Book One Nebraska, Once Upon a Town by Bob Greene. (See sidebar for photos from the 2014 Law Day event. There you may also find Classroom Resources related to the "American Veterans" theme.)
