Skutt Catholic HS Wins State Mock Trial

Not even a good old Nebraska snow storm could stop Skutt Catholic High School from winning the Nebraska High School State Mock Trial Title. Skutt Catholic High School defeated the North Platte High School team in final round competition on Wednesday, December 8th, in Omaha. The Honorable Lyle Strom, Federal District Court Judge for the District of Nebraska, presided over the competition at the Roman L. Hruska U. S. Courthouse.

The Skutt team, which presented the government’s side of an immigration asylum case, In the Matter of Kev Inruser, has achieved the privilege to represent Nebraska at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 6-8th 2010.
Over 50 volunteer judges and attorneys from the Omaha Metro area served as both performance and presiding panel judges in the four rounds of competitions.

Members of the winning team are Matt Meyer, Danielle Desa, Tanner Sorensen, Scott Bullins, Michael Judah, Haley Gordman, Tom Knoblauch-Rankin and Maggie Hoffman. The team’s teacher coach is Mary Meyers. Judy and Patrick Borchers are the attorney coaches. The eight members of the winning team were awarded scholarships to Metropolitan Community College by Dean Daryl Hansen to the paralegal program.

Members of the second-place team from North Platte are Audrey Bellew, Kassie Goentzel, Sarah Hansen, Jamie Panzer, Brett Schmidt, Cassie Slaght, and Kacie Wolverton. Margo Hirschfeld is the team’s teacher coach, and Jennifer Kearney and Jennifer Wellan are the team’s attorney coaches.

Taking third place in the championship was Chadron High School. Ainsworth High School was the fourth place winner. Other schools winning their regional Mock Trial competition and competing in the State Championship received honorable mention. They are Raymond Central, Wilcox Hildreth, Duchesne Academy, Columbus High School, Wayne High School, Dundy County Stratton, Fillmore Central, and Papillion-LaVista South.

The Nebraska High School Mock Trial Project is sponsored by the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and its State Center for Law-Related Education. Bar Foundation President Robert Berkshire of Omaha congratulates the Skutt Catholic High School team on winning the 2009 state championship. Berkshire stated that the Foundation, through its Legacy of Liberty program, supports this and other law-related education projects for Nebraska citizens throughout the state.
